Sacraments

Baptism for Infants and Children

Since a Baptism is a communal event, the sacrament of Baptism at St. Brigid is generally celebrated during one of the regular weekend Masses, although, if needed, arrangements can be made with the celebrant for an alternate time.

Parents are required to attend a Baptism preparation session for their first child, and they are welcome to attend for others, if they so desire. This preparation program gives parents the opportunity to consider the meaning of their own faith, to ask questions, discuss how to share and pass on their faith to their child(ren), affirm the Church’s understanding of Baptism, and come to understand the elements of the Rite of Baptism itself.  These Sacrament of Baptism preparation sessions are held in the Parish Office, and scheduled with the pastor, John Krumm, or Janell Klippel.  As you think about the baptism of your child, you might want to prayerfully begin to consider the following questions:

  • What does faith mean to me/my spouse?
  • How do I/we live my/our faith?
  • What is the faith I/we want our child to have?

Parents should also give prayerful thought about whom they wish to be the Godparent(s) of their child.  Godparent(s) should be committed Christians who are living their belief in Jesus.  In accepting the responsibility of being a Godparent, the person is saying he/she wishes to support the growth of the child to full Christian adulthood in faith, and the parents in their role as Christian parents.

Godparent(s)must be at least 16 years old, and at least one of the Godparents must be a Catholic who has received the Sacrament of Confirmation, and regularly worships and participates in the church.  One of the Godparents may be a member of another Christian faith.

Rite of Christian Initiation for Children (RCIC)

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Children (RCIC) enables baptized or unbaptized grade school age children to enter into a relationship with the living God. Our goal is to provide a means of conversion appropriate to the child’s age and understanding. Like RCIA, we strive to instruct the child in his/her faith as a Catholic Christian. Much of the catechesis for children greatly depends on forming and nurturing relationships with other believing children and their families.

Sacrament Preparation for Adults

Those adults contemplating Baptism in the Catholic Christian faith should consider the RCIA (Rite of Christian Inititiation for Adults) program at our parish.

The Rite of the Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is the process by which the community helps adults to discern the call of the Holy Spirit and respond in faith. Through the RCIA, our faith community welcomes adults to full membership in the Church.

RCIA is for anyone who is 18 or over and has not been baptized or if they are baptized in another Christian tradition and would like to become a Catholic.

If you are a baptized adult Catholic and have not made your First Communion and Confirmation, but would like to do so, you may obtain an initial interview by contacting Fr. John Krumm.

Sessions begin in early fall and continue through the year, culminating at the Easter Vigil Service on Holy Saturday with the celebration of the Sacraments of Initiation. RCIA meets weekly on Thursday evenings at 7:00 pm. The entire parish community is welcome to attend.

Matrimony

Couples interested in the Sacrament of Marriage must approach the pastor at least six months before the proposed wedding date. Couples need to fulfill all requirements of Church Law (Canons 1055-1165) and follow the Archdiocesan and Parish marriage policies.

Engaged couples will participate in the St. Brigid Marriage Preparation Program to help prepare them for the commitment to the Sacrament of Matrimony. With the direction of the Parish priest, the process includes discussion about various aspects of daily married life through the use of the FOCUS program. Copies of archdiocesan and Parish marriage regulations are available in the Parish office.
