“Singing is for the one who loves.”

(St. Augustine, Sermo 336)

“I will sing with the spirit and I will sing with the mind also.”

(1 Corinthians 14:15)

The St. Brigid Choir consists of two separate groups who rehearse separately during the week, and combine on Sunday morning for the Mass:

  1. The St. Brigid Choristers, open to all children Grades 3-8.
  2. The Adults of the Choir, open to high school students and older. If you are an adult and interested in participating, please contact Dr. Douglas O’Neill at the contact below.

The St. Brigid Choristers is a choral training program preparing children for music ministry and life-long praise of God. Under the guidance of our patroness St. Brigid, we allow children to experience the joy of music in the tradition of the Roman Catholic Church. Created in the image of God, all children have the potential to discover their God-given voices, leading to a life of experiencing beauty.

The Roman Catholic Church has a tradition of “singing schools” that is as old as the system of Western education itself, and choirs as we know them owe their very existence to the Roman Catholic Church. The Second Vatican Council affirmed the important role of choirs in the Mass, and encouraged the sustenance and development of “schools of singing.” Every child has the potential to use their God-given voice to the best of their ability. In addition, through the rehearsal and performance process, children grow more confident in their abilities and in their social interactions, becoming well-formed and responsible adults who contribute to society. A parent who actively supports and encourages a child’s development through music ministry is practicing good stewardship of the child’s developing spirit and soul, gifts from God that must be nurtured, cared for, and cultivated.

Vide, ut quod ore cantas, corde credas, et quod corde credis, operibus comprobes.

“See that what you sing with your lips you may believe in your heart,

and that what you believe in your heart you may show forth in your works.”

(Blessing of Cantors, from the 10th Canon of the Council of Carthage, c. 398 A.D.)

The Sacristans prepare vestments and vessels for specific seasons and liturgies. They also ensure that vestments, vessels, and other liturgical materials are maintained, cleaned, or replaced as necessary, and set up for each rite.

Servers assist the priest and members of the congregation during the liturgy. They lead the entrance procession and hold the book for the priest when he lifts his hands to pray in our name. They help prepare the altar before the Eucharistic prayer and do various tasks on special occasions such as carrying incense or holy water. Children are eligible to become altar servers in 5th grade. Adults serve at morning Masses during the week.

Ushers greet members of the congregation as they arrive for Mass and help in finding seating for parishioners. They arrange for individuals or families to take up the offertory and collection and assist with the Communion procession. Additionally, they are attentive to special needs during the Mass, such as ensuring Communion is brought to those unable to walk. Any man, woman or older youth is invited to become a member of the Ministry of Usher.
