I am entering into my 18th year of teaching.\u00a0 My first 6 years were spent teaching in a resource room in Yellow Springs.\u00a0 I worked with students grade K-6 during this time.\u00a0 I then spent 8 years working for the Greene County ESC.\u00a0 I had a variety of roles there including teaching at the Learning Center, the Intensive Needs Unit, the Partial Hospitalization Program and the Academy.\u00a0 This will be my 4th year at St. Brigid. \u00a0 I graduated from the University of Dayton with a Bachelor of Science in Education, majoring as an Intervention Specialist.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">My husband and I live in Fairborn with our four children, Brooklyn, Ezra, Anya and Niko. I have also been a swim coach for the Dayton Raiders for the past 8 years.\u00a0 I grew up in Catholic Schools going to St. John the Baptist in Harrison, Ohio from 1st to 8th grade and then McAuley High School.\u00a0 It is a blessing to be back in a Catholic school setting!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I am excited to support our students as they grow academically, socially and spiritually.\u00a0 As an Intervention specialist, I work closely with students, families and teachers to provide individualized support and help each student reach their full potential.\u00a0 I believe that every student can learn and succeed when provided with the right support, encouragement, and opportunities.\u00a0 My goal is to create a welcoming, positive learning environment where students feel valued, empowered and confident in their abilities.\u00a0 I look forward to partnering with our students, families and teachers throughout the school year and celebrating every step of their growth and success!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Links of Interest to Parents and Students<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Reading Skills<\/h4>\n<p>Reading is a skill that must be practiced like any sport is practiced.\u00a0 Help your student spend time reading everyday and model the skill yourself.\u00a0 In today\u2019s busy world, sports often get a lot of practice time and academics do not.\u00a0 For younger children who can\u2019t read yet, simple puzzles and board games can help develop skills needed later for reading and, of course, there should be a bedtime story.\u00a0 Try not to let the TV be on during the school week.\u00a0 Learn about studies that have been conducted regarding TV\u2019s in children\u2019s rooms.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>TV and Grades<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.utdanacenter.org\/k12mathbenchmarks\/tasks\/29_tvtestgrades.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">http:\/\/www.utdanacenter.org\/k12mathbenchmarks\/tasks\/29_tvtestgrades.php<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/tech\/gaming\/2006-10-02-gaming-grades_x.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/tech\/gaming\/2006-10-02-gaming-grades_x.htm<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Should TV\u2019s be in a child\u2019s bedroom?<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/parentstv.org\/PTC\/publications\/rgcolumns\/2007\/1015.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">http:\/\/parentstv.org\/PTC\/publications\/rgcolumns\/2007\/1015.asp<br \/>\n<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2008\/03\/04\/health\/04well.html?em\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2008\/03\/04\/health\/04well.html?em<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Accelerated Reader Program<\/h4>\n<p>St. Brigid School utilizes the Accelerated Reader Program in 3rd through the 8th grade.\u00a0 This program promotes reading skills through the use of books the students choose to read from the library.\u00a0 After reading the book of their choice, the student can take a comprehension test on the computers in the library or the classroom and see how closely they read the book.\u00a0 Teachers set point levels the students need to achieve on an individual basis.\u00a0 Strong readers are able to read longer and more challenging books during the same reading time as other students are reading books geared to their level instead of all reading the same thing.\u00a0 St. Brigid owns over 2,000 books with tests on our computers, and we add more every year.\u00a0 We always try to add the popular books students enjoy reading such as:\u00a0 <u>The Harry Potter Series<\/u>, <u>Magic Tree House<\/u> books, <u>Junie B. Jones<\/u>, <u>Series of Unfortunate Events<\/u>, <u>Chronicles of Narnia<\/u> and many, many more.
